To mark a connection between art and literature I read Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes to my 5th grade classes. We discussed the role of this little girl and her influence. The role of art, specifically Origami, to this little girl and later her classmates is remarkable. I hope it stays with just a few of my 5th graders the way that it did with me during my 4th grade year. Making the cranes was excruciating for some of my students but once they mastered certain folds and remembered the order of the steps they had a great time making crane after crane.
